How long does it take to get a Bachelors Degree in Engineering?

To become an engineer, you will need to obtain a bachelors degree in engineering, which usually takes four years.  There are also some dual degree programs that run for five years and offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  This is the time you will need to work as an engineer.

There are programs focused on various fields of engineering, such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software development, industrial engineering, petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering and more.  You will be able to choose the area that best suits your interests.  After completing the bachelor’s program you will be able to work as an engineer.

How long does it take to get a Bachelors Degree in Engineering?

A typical bachelor’s program in any engineering discipline requires at least four years of full-time study.  However, students should be aware that the engineering program is rigorous.  To succeed in the complex coursework required of engineering students, you will need to devote a lot of time to homework, projects and study.

Although a bachelor’s degree in engineering could theoretically be obtained in four years, research has shown that many STEM students do not graduate on time.  In fact, less than half of Asian students, just one-third of white students, less than a quarter of Latin American students and less than one-fifth of black students receive an STEM degree in five years, according to the Research Institute of Higher Education. What will happen to other STEM students?  Some earn a STEM degree more slowly, while others move to lighter majors, transfer to other schools, or drop out of college altogether.

Under what circumstance will it take more than 4 years to get a Bachelors Degree in Engineering?

The typical duration of a bachelor’s degree is four years.  However, many times students decide to complete a degree in five years.  The reason for this is the complexity of many courses.  Engineering requires very challenging courses in topics such as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

To stay on the four-year plan, students will need to take 15 credits per semester or 30 credits per academic year.  Because the courses are so intensive, some students find it difficult to get 15 engineering credits and complete a five-year plan instead.

  Types of Engineering Degrees

·         Associate degrees in Engineering

This is the shortest degree you can get in engineering.  When you enroll in an associate program, you can earn an engineering degree in just two years.  However, this will not make you an engineer.  In all engineering disciplines, you need at least a bachelor’s degree to obtain even an entry-level job, and in some disciplines, an entry-level position may require a master’s degree or higher.

If you never improve your engineering education beyond the level of a junior specialist, you can expect that your future career opportunities will be limited to the positions of engineering technologist, rather than full-fledged positions of engineer.

·         Bachelors Degree in Engineering

As a rule, engineers need a bachelor’s degree to work in this profession.  In most fields of engineering, having a bachelor’s degree will allow you to at least get started as a beginner.  In many engineering disciplines, you could spend your entire career working in a professional practice with only the level of education you want.

This does not mean that having a degree is not useful, because it often is.  There are certain roles – such as a professor of engineering, a researcher in academia and a researcher in advanced research and development – that you can only perform with a higher level of education.  However, in many fields of engineering, most engineers report having only a bachelor’s degree.

·         Master’s degrees in Engineering

Suppose you decide to have an engineering degree that does not exceed a bachelor’s degree.  Your next step may be a master’s degree, ie a master’s degree.  When you add the duration of a master’s degree in engineering to the time you have already spent on a bachelor’s degree, you mean a minimum of five or six years after high school to get that level of education.

Many engineering programs at the master’s level are designed to be completed in two years of full-time study.  A master’s degree in engineering can be a scientific one that requires a dissertation with original research, or a professional one that does not require research.  In any case, the in-depth coursework that makes up the Master of Engineering curriculum is a challenge.

·         Doctor of Engineering degree

Doctoral engineering students are the ones who will spend the longest time at school.  Engineers with a Ph.D  can spend up to 12 years – and sometimes longer – in college, between a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate and research.

At the doctoral level, this component of research (or lack thereof) plays a major role in how long it takes to obtain a degree.  Just as there are both professional and scientific options for a master’s degree, there are also various options for a master’s degree.

Types of Engineering majors

  • Chemical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Industrial construction
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Aerospace technology
  • Ocean engineering
  • Nuclear engineering
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Environmental engineering

Cost of a bachelors degree in engineering

The average tuition fee for bachelor’s and top US engineering institutions is $ 13,072 for state residents and $ 44,742 for state students in the 2019/2020 academic year (Comparison of College Costs, 2020).

Tuition fees vary from institution to institution, with the lowest tuition fee at Purdue University being $ 28,794.  On the other hand, Carnegie Mellon University has the highest fee – $ 57,119.  The following is the cost of studying at the best engineering universities and colleges in the United States.

Admission requirements for Bachelors Degree in Engineering

Requirements for engineering vary depending on the university.  However, most of them have a basic structure of engineering prerequisites and basic courses.  To begin with, undergraduate students will need to complete 60 general education courses.  General education courses are the same for all students, regardless of the curriculum.

These courses cover almost every topic and contain introductory principles to each.  At some point in the first two years of study, a foreign student must meet with a supervisor and declare engineering as a specialty.  After completing these basic courses, the student will begin to fulfil the basic requirements of the class, which focus on the most important engineering material.
