  The training required to become a notary in Florida varies from other states.  Some states require notaries to take a three- or six-hour course before they can take the notarial exam, while others require notaries to take the exam only.  Many states do not require either.

Where to get notary education

  State-approved notary education courses may be offered by public colleges, organizations such as the American Society of Notaries, or the Office of the Secretary of State.  These courses describe the duties and responsibilities of notaries in this state and help students learn how to keep an account book, verify identity, assess trust in witnesses, and work with different types of documents.

  Notaries in some states may be trained in electronic notarization.  At present, electronic notarial acts still have to be performed in person, but the relevant documents can be signed or transmitted electronically.  Instead of using their traditional stamp to notarize documents, notaries can use a unique digital “stamp”, but first they must learn to work with digital documents.

  Who is a Notary?

  Notaries, or notaries public, witness the signing of oaths, confirmations, and official documents such as contracts, deeds, affidavits, and testimonies.  Thanks to the notary who certifies the document, the government can be sure that the person signing the document is the right person, competent and knowledgeable about the procedure and signs at will.  The notary must perform his work in the physical presence of the signatory to verify all of the above.

  What does it take to become a notary?

  You do not need a diploma to become a notary, but a certificate or a law degree in criminal justice, political science or paralegal studies can be useful for professional growth.  You must have a commission or license from the state, and experience may be required, depending on your employer.  In addition, you will need strong skills in organization, multitasking, interpersonal communication, typing and Microsoft Office, as well as attention to detail and the ability to pass the test without previous convictions.

  Requirements to become a Notary in Florida

  1. You must be at least 18 years old
  2. You must be a legal resident of Florida
  3. You must be able to read, write and understand English
  4. You have not been convicted of serious crimes, even those that have not been reported
  5. If you have been convicted of a felony, you can apply under the following conditions:
  6. Provide a written statement of your allegations, including the date, crime, circumstances, and your life after conviction
  7. Provide the state with copies of journal entries (sentence and sentence orders);  to do this, you must obtain a certified copy from the court that found you guilty

·         Apply to become a notary in Florida

  Applications to become a notary are usually available at the Office or on the Secretary of State’s (SOS) website.  The application requests information on criminal history, previous notarial commissions and basic identification data.  Depending on the state, applicants may be required to take an oath, which must be notarized and sworn under the threat of perjury.  Some states may also require a bond to be included with the application.  In some states, applicants must be trained by a notary before applying.

·         Attend the training

·         Purchase Notary materials

·         Notify the employer of the notarization

   Some employers and / or positions require that the employee be a notary.  Upon receipt of the notary commission, employers must be notified and the employee can begin to perform the functions of this duty.  However, if it is not necessary to be a notary, adding a certificate to a person’s resume or informing him or her current employer about newly acquired abilities can lead to career growth or additional opportunities.
