Can You Get a Masters Without Bachelors Degree?

Can You Get a Masters Without Bachelors Degree?

Surprisingly, some schools offer master’s programs for students who have either completed most of their education and dropped out, or for people who have taken various additional courses and completed them for a career.  In any case, these people can access graduate school in some educational institutions.

But this privilege does not apply to everyone and not everywhere.  Before you can apply for a master’s program and miss a bachelor’s degree, you should talk to your school counselors and contact the university itself.

Under what circumstances can you get Masters without Bachelors Degree?

There are a number of criteria that a university can consider when evaluating an application for a master’s program.  Some universities insist on obtaining a bachelor’s degree from a recognized and accredited university.  However, this should not deter you from applying for a master’s degree, as long-term professional benefits will help you, and many universities will consider your professional experience and other certificates and diplomas instead of a bachelor’s degree when considering your application.

What other qualification apart from bachelors degree can you get masters with?

While it is true that most universities expect graduate students to already have a bachelor’s degree, there are still some universities that are considering other experiences, such as work experience, instead of a bachelor’s degree.  Did you know that only 34% of Americans have a bachelor’s degree?  This leaves the vast majority of those who have not obtained a bachelor’s degree.  And even fewer have a master’s degree, by 9.2%.

If you are one of many who do not have a bachelor’s degree but want to get a master’s degree, this is possible.  Some universities will take into account your professional experience and certain certificates and / or diplomas that you may have.  However, it is important for you to conduct proper research.

There are also certain areas of master’s degree that do not necessarily require a bachelor’s degree due to the nature of the program.  One such example is the Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Simmons, which accepts registered nurses without a bachelor’s degree into the program.

Let’s also take the example of journalism.  While a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline will undoubtedly help, in fact, the skills needed to succeed in journalism are different from those you could acquire in other subjects.  For this reason, you are likely to find some universities that accept applications from candidates without a formal degree, such as a master’s degree in online journalism from Falmouth University.

YES, you have options when it comes to your academic career, and you don’t always need to get a bachelor’s degree in a field related to your prospective master’s program.  According to the US News and World Report, whether you are a business manager with many years of experience looking to explore another field of activity, or you are looking for the job of your dreams for the first time, changing majors is definitely an option.

How to get a Masters without Bachelors Degree

·         Use your professional experience.

In your master’s program, you will learn a number of concepts that you may have already implemented in your professional life to great success, but do not know about theories, best practices or the full practical potential of the concept.

But if you’ve already implemented a concept and seen it work (or fail), your knowledge of the concept will put you, if not one step ahead of the bachelor’s degree graduate who joined the master’s program right after graduation.  The knowledge you gain while working or self-employed can motivate the university to approve you for a master’s degree instead of a bachelor’s degree when considering your application.

·         Other education / professional certificates

There are many reasons why someone may not have a bachelor’s degree.  You may not have had the financial means to pay for four years of study, or you may have started but failed to complete the degree.  About 40% of students actually drop out of college, leaving a large minority with incomplete education.

Dropping out of college is certainly a common practice and must happen for a reason.  Students may feel like they have to make money now, or they have started a family, or there are those who are just tired of their program.

·         Transfer your degree to another field

There is also a dilemma that many students face: they have a bachelor’s degree, but it has nothing to do with the master’s program they are seeking.  However, this is not always a problem.  There are many degrees in which an unrelated bachelor’s degree is perfectly acceptable.

The opportunity to obtain a master’s degree without a bachelor’s degree can really open the door for many students.  You may have changed your mind about what you want to study or pursue a career, or you may know that you want to get an MBA but don’t want to study business for four years.

·         Obtaining a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree

Applying for a master’s program without a bachelor’s degree and drawing on your personal and professional experience is one way to do this, as we discussed above.  But it is also possible to obtain a combined degree.

An integrated master’s degree, also called a two-in-one degree, is a program that combines a master’s degree with an additional qualification at another level of study, most often a bachelor’s degree.  Instead of taking both as separate degrees, it is the study of one, longer program.  Such degrees are becoming increasingly popular.
